Burning Desire

In January 2026, I was commissioned to create a 24x30 painting that would complement another piece the buyer had previously acquired from me. Together, we envisioned the new artwork as a moth drawn to a flame. To harmonize with the existing painting and the colors in his home, I created the light using mostly silver and white. The commission’s heavy texture of black, gray, silver, and white gave it a dark yet tender quality, an atmosphere that felt both mysterious and comforting. The client and I were deeply pleased with the result.

Even then, I knew I would eventually return to the concept and create another version, this time with an actual flame in place of the softer light.

That single change transformed the entire meaning.

In the original commission, the moth appears drawn toward something gentle, almost spiritual, as though it is being guided through the darkness by a quiet, reassuring force. In Burning Desire, the moth is pulled toward something far more seductive, volatile, and dangerous. The flame is beautiful, passionate, and alive, but it also possesses the power to consume everything that comes too close.

Captivated by something mesmerizing, the moth follows its desire despite the possibility of being destroyed by it. This piece explores passion, temptation, love, lust, addiction, and the overwhelming force of wanting something even when we sense it may carry us beyond the boundaries of safety and leave us permanently changed.

It asks us to consider what choice we will make when life places something beautiful and irresistible before us. If we allow ourselves to be burned, do we emerge wiser, carrying the marks of what we have learned, or do we continue walking into the blinding flames, again and again, hoping the outcome will somehow be different?

Sometimes the things that awaken the deepest fire within us are the very things capable of consuming us.
