Ash & Embers

This piece will forever be one of my favorite mistakes.

Created on a heavily textured 24 × 36 canvas, this piece began as a sunset. But somewhere between the layers, shadows, and movement of the brush, the sky began to burn. The sunset slowly disappeared, transforming into something darker, heavier, and far more powerful—a landscape of smoke, ash, and glowing embers.

Ash & Embers proves once again that I am not always in control of the brush or the canvas. Sometimes, the canvas takes control of me, carrying the work somewhere I never intended to go but somehow needed to follow.

What began as a peaceful ending became a fire still burning beneath the surface—and one of those beautiful mistakes I could never recreate on purpose.
