Off the Beaten Path

Exhausted from a long hike beneath the heat of a humid day, I slipped my aching feet into a clear creek I discovered after wandering beyond the trail.

The path had been dry and unforgiving, and my body was desperate for rest. Then, hidden beyond the man made trail, I found water. Cool, clear, and quietly moving through the stones, it felt like a small miracle waiting where I had not been told to look.

Years ago, I learned that some of the most beautiful things are found only after we leave the path created for us by man. But beauty beyond the familiar does not always come without danger. The farther I wandered, the more alert I became. My eyes remained open. My senses heightened. I was reminded that wonder and risk often exist beside one another, and that instinct is its own kind of compass.

This painting was inspired by a photograph I took that day, shown in the last photograph. I added a few details through memory and imagination, but preserved its heart: the exhaustion, the discovery, and the overwhelming relief of finding something beautiful exactly when I needed it most.

Sometimes the path leads us forward. Other times, we must be brave enough to leave it and trust ourselves to recognize the miracle waiting beyond it.
