My Brown Eyed Girl

You were not here when I began this painting: only a spackle knife and a feeling. I moved the blade in slow, quiet arcs, letting it teach my hands how to listen. I almost stopped when the surface settled, when the room fell still, when I thought the work was complete. Then the light changed, and there she was, the face the canvas had been holding. Eyes closed. Lips soft. A calm that felt like trust. She had been here the whole time, waiting for my heart to be ready.

I thought of you, my brown eyed girl. I thought of the day you wished for green eyes like mine, and I felt the smallest ache, because I knew what you did not yet know. I have seen gold in your brown eyes from the first moment I saw you. I saw fire when you cried, wonder when you slept, and a quiet courage that keeps growing as you do. Your eyes do not need to change to be beautiful. They are beautiful because they are yours.

This is for you, and for anyone who learned to praise the loud colors first, who forgot to see the ones that carry us. The sky might get the glory, but it is the earth that holds us. Brown is the color of the place that receives us when we fall and gives us back to ourselves when we rise. Brown is where life begins again.

So hear me. Brown eyes are not plain. They are constellations seen up close. They are stories spoken in a softer voice. They are strengths that do not boast, and truths that do not require permission. When you look in the mirror, I hope you see what I see: the warmth that makes a winter room feel like home, the amber hour that makes even small things luminous, and the impossible brightness of a sunlit fleck that proves there is gold inside you.

Open your eyes. Let them meet the world. Let your light be seen exactly as it is. The world needs that steady flame you carry.
